Recently, I had a run-in of sorts with a former radio colleague, who was once part of a talk radio group known as “The Liberty Lineup,” after he insisted that conservatives put aside the GOP’s betrayal of conservatism and vote Republican in 2020 to save America.
In a social media post where my friend, we’ll call him R.C., endorsed Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) — Liberty Score® 49% (F) — for no reason other than #notDemocrat, I asked him if it wasn’t time for “conservatives” in Colorado to stop playing the binary game owned and operated by the duopoly, and to stop voting for the lesser of two evils.
Having completely sold out to Trumpism and the Republican Party bought and paid for by Donald Trump, R.C. responded by echoing the talking points we hear every election season by the GOP:
“No, David. It’s time to hold off the Left a little longer while we organize, grow our ranks, and educate enough people to reclaim our founding principles. In the meantime, grow the hell up.”
Is it just me, or does my friend sound like he’s reading a Mitch McConnell fundraising letter?
Regular readers and listeners of The Strident Conservative know that conservatives lost their GOP home shortly after Trump was inaugurated and Republicans began actively selling us out, bastardizing our values, breaking their promises, and lying about it — a point made again in yesterday’s piece by guest contributor Eric Buss.
Much like the sci-fi movie The Matrix, R.C. and others like him remain slaves to the system due to ignorance or choice. But the good news is that there are many like Neo who are breaking free of their bondage. For example, on Monday, former 2016 GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina used her Twitter and Facebook accounts to give her thoughts on how far down the rabbit hole the GOP has fallen.
In a welcome display of honesty and integrity, Fiorina wondered: “When did so many Republicans decide that we should also pledge allegiance to The Party and swear fidelity to President Trump?” And after sharing how she has been called “disloyal” for being critical of Trump, she reminded us that “it is both our responsibility and our right to hold elected officials accountable: for their words, their actions and the consequences of both.”
Also on Monday, Justin Amash (I-MI) — Liberty Score® 92% (A) — sent a tweet pointing out the faux conservatism of the GOP, and he challenged the R.C.s of the world to “walk away” from the GOP and “start something new.”
The Republican Party is not a conservative party, and it’s not going to be one anytime soon. Conservatives are providing critical votes to a party that actively opposes limited government and free markets. Walk away, start something new, and regain your voice.

Any hope of “reclaim(ing) our founding principles,” as my friend claims he’s trying to do, will be impossible unless we break free of the Republican/Democrat duopoly. We must, to paraphrase Hebrews 12:1, “throw off every encumbrance” so that we can “run the race set out before us.”
The Republican Party is an encumbrance; we need to throw it off so that we can run the race to save America.
