After a boatload of broken promises, GOP breaks out election-year playbook

With the new Omnibus law serving as the cherry on top of America’s economic sundae, Trump and the GOP have succeeded in funding most of Barack Obama’s priorities. And with a Blue tsunami warning in effect from now until November, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan have whipped out their well-worn copy of the “How to Win Conservative Voters After Breaking Your Promises To Them” playbook.

Fortunately, for the truth-challenged cowards in the Gang Of Phonies, the playbook is a short read consisting of three easy-to-follow-steps:

  1. Make empty promises
  2. Break those promises
  3. Repeat as necessary

Besides the fact that the omnibus Trump signed into law increases spending in areas he promised to cut, the Omnibus is the completion of step two for the Republicans. For example, the GOP promised to defund Planned Parenthood; the Omnibus funds the baby butchers. The GOP promised to repeal Obamacare; the Omnibus tried to save it. The GOP promised to defund sanctuary cities; the Omnibus funds sanctuary cities.

And for good measure—let’s call it a double-dollop of whipped cream on our sundae—the Omnibus included several anti-Second Amendment provisions, and it exploded the national debt.

With step two complete, the GOP now moves to step three, which takes us back to step one.

Between now and November, we can expect the spread of a host of lies designed to once again fool conservatives into voting Republican. And with nothing on the agenda concerning serious legislation, we can also expect a host of “show votes” from Ryan and McConnell to give the illusion of promises kept. One such show vote is already in the works.

Having just broken their promise to cut spending with the Omnibus, Paul Ryan is suddenly concerned about big government’s spending addiction. In a recent announcement, Paul said that the House will take up a balanced budget amendment when they return to work after recess. With a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress necessary to amend the Constitution, and with the GOP membership nowhere near those numbers, this is clearly nothing more than an attempt to cover their Omnibus betrayal.

This is just the latest attempt at a show vote. A few months before the GOP funded Planned Parenthood in the Omnibus, Republicans held a pro-life show vote when the House passed a bill banning abortion after 20 weeks. The measure failed in the Senate due to the filibuster rules.

The GOP has been treating conservatives like a bunch of patsies long enough. It’s time to end our affiliation with these lying liars once and for all.
