The constitutional protections provided in the First Amendment regarding our freedom of religion took another hit in Colorado as the state supreme court refused to intervene in a case where a Colorado baker is being forced by law to violate his Christian faith.
The case of Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cake Shop, made news when the Colorado Civil Rights Commission ruled in May, 2014 that Mr. Phillips was guilty of discrimination when he refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple a few years prior.
As an aside, this was years prior to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling supposedly legalizing homosexual marriage. At the time, such a “marriage” was unconstitutional under the Colorado constitution.
The commission directed Phillips to immediately change his store policies, submit his staff to mandatory sensitivity training and submit quarterly reports to the commission confirming that he had not refused service to customers based on their sexual orientation.
Proof of the commission’s absolute cluelessness in this case is provided by Commission Chairwoman, Katina Banks:
“You can have your beliefs, but you can’t hurt other people at the same time. Religious freedom is undoubtedly an important American value, but so is the right to be treated equally under the law — free from discrimination.”
An “American value?” I’m afraid not, Ms. Banks. IT’S A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT!!
Banks isn’t the only idiot involved in the case who shouldn’t be. Monica Marquiz, one of the justices who voted not to hear the appeal, was the Colorado GLBT Bar Association’s 2009 Outstanding GLBT Attorney Award winner.
Conflict of interest anyone?
The LGBT movement claimed for years that their only goal was equality and the freedom to live their lives — a sort of live and let live. But as we are seeing more and more, their goal is actually the absolute acceptance of their lifestyle choices regardless of how it affects others — a live and NOT let live.
This is just the latest battle in America’s long culture war! And if you think this doesn’t affect you, it won’t be long before you discover otherwise.
