Despite Trump’s SOTU rhetoric, the U.S. economy is NOT strong

I watched Trump’s State of the Union speech last night and besides losing 90 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back, I discovered that I could have simply replayed the 2018 edition because Trump used his time on the national stage to spew the same word vomit he regurgitated last year.

As he did a year ago, Trump took credit for an economic recovery that began in 2009 under Obama, and he boasted, imagine that, about how the recovery was due to his awesome trade policies — aka tariffs and trade wars — and his signature tax cut plan that he once called “the biggest tax cut in history.”

Trump did talk about a few other things. He included a laundry list of big government spending priorities that even brought a smile to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s face, and he made some patronizing references to his border wall, foreign policy, and abortion. But I want to focus on Trump’s claims about our awesome economy.

Of course, I’m using the word “awesome” in a purely sarcastic context because Trump’s claims about how his trade war and tax cuts have turned the economy around are merely the rhetorical ramblings of a failed “Republican” running for re-election.

Trump’s trade war has created a hopeless economic hell that will take years to recover from, assuming Marxist Democrats don’t destroy it first.

Beginning with tariffs on washing machines manufactured outside the U.S., Trump launched his personal war on free trade one year ago, and using real economic data as our barometer, we can now conclude that economic history is repeating itself. Tariffs are killing jobs and causing consumer prices in many sectors of the economy to skyrocket as we recently witnessed with companies like Whirlpool, Ford, and General Motors.

As far as Trump’s tax cuts are concerned, they are as fake as the news he always complains about.

Most of the tax cuts have been swallowed up by the higher consumer prices created by Trump’s trade war, and when mixed with Trump’s big government spending, he’s creating deficits that would make even Obama blush. Meanwhile, the National Taxpayer’s Union Foundation is predicting that the annual cost of tariffs on consumers will be $41.65 billion next year and will exceed the taxes Americans will pay for Obamacare ($34.6 billion).

But wait, it gets worse. Now that tax returns are being filed for the first time since Trump’s tax cuts became law, middle class taxpayers are reporting higher tax liabilities than they had before the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was signed into law.

The so-called conservative media will likely spend the next several days praising Trump’s teleprompter-fed rhetoric as proof of his awesomeness, but the fact remains that he’s the same shyster we knew him to be before God anointed him to save America.
