Donald Trump, evangelical hypocrisy, and Joe Biden’s groping

During the presidency of Bill Clinton, evangelicals were outraged by the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct by the lying, cheating womanizer occupying the White House. Moral character, after all, is an important qualification for being president.

However, all of that changed in 2016 when another lying, cheating womanizer, this time with an R after his name ran for Clinton’s old job.

Led by the Fellowship of Pharisees (Robert Jeffress, Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell, Jr., to name a few), evangelicals traded biblical morality for moral relativism and abandoned character for a seat at Herod’s (Trump’s) table. Their hypocrisy was so obvious that I once wrote an article about how evangelicals owed America an apology.

Why did I take you on this trip down memory lane?

By now, you’ve probably heard about how possible 2020 Democrat candidate for president and former Vice President Joe Biden has been accused by Lucy Flores, a Democrat politician from Nevada, of “touching and kissing her inappropriately” in 2014. According to Flores, Biden grasped her shoulders from behind and kissed the back of her head without her consent.

Her accusation has grown into a “me too” narrative of sorts, where others are accusing Biden of being a sexual predator groping women in the shadows, an accusation denied by a spokesperson for the former V.P.

Whether Biden is the man his accusers claim him to be is moot at the moment. The real story is how evangelicals and the rest of the Trump cult are reacting to the news.

For example, in an appearance on Fox News Sunday, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told host Christ Wallace that Biden “has a big problem” following Flores’s accusation.

“I think Joe Biden has a big problem here because he calls it affection and handshakes,” Conway stated. “His party calls it completely inappropriate.” She also praised Flores for her bold decision to come forward with her accusation “against the highest levels of her own political party.”

When asked about the sexual assault and misconduct accusations brought against Trump, Conway said the White House has “certainly covered that ad infinitum during the campaign, the transition, practically every day.” Amazingly, she offered no praise for the “bold” stand taken by Trump’s accusers, and she made no mention of the Access Hollywood recording where Trump was caught boasting about grabbing women by the p*ssy.

And here’s an interesting coincidence. Trump accused Biden in 2016 of “grabbing, kissing and groping” women after Biden called him out for sexually assaulting women after the Access Hollywood recording was released. Already recycling his 2016 campaign lies for 2020, it looks like Trump will be recycling his 2016 petty, grade-school name calling as well.

Though he hasn’t come out with a statement on Biden just yet, Pharisee Robert Jeffress, in his words, “charitably” called “never-Trump evangelicals” recently a bunch of “spineless morons” who “cannot admit they were wrong” [about Trump]. What do you want to bet that he’ll give Trump a pass while breaking out the sackcloth and ashes about Biden’s abominable behavior?

To paraphrase Tony Perkins, the Fellowship of Pharisees and their evangelical sheep will continue giving Trump a “mulligan” for sexual assaults, adulterous affairs with porn stars, and other sexual indiscretions while criticizing harmless shoulder rubs and innocent pecks on the head by Joe Biden.
