With the Republican Convention right around the corner, we have received word of a court victory by a #NeverTrump delegate that could bring the #FreeTheDelegates effort one step closer to ending Donald Trump’s coronation as the GOP nominee for President of the United States. What was once thought impossible is quickly becoming not only possible, but probable.
Many of my evangelical friends are furious at this prospect; convinced that opposition to the The Donald–either at the convention or as the GOP candidate–means Hillary will be our next president . . . and it will be my fault. And that brings me to the point of today’s piece.
Christians don’t support Trump because he represents moral, constitutional leadership — they support him because he’s less immoral than the alternative. And my fellow Christian Constitutional Conservatives (CCC) can only point to one primary reason to vote for the New York liberal . . . current and future Supreme Court vacancies.
Besides the fact that there is absolutely no reasonable assurance that the man who once stated how his pro-abortion, pro-partial birth abortion sister would be an excellent candidate to serve on the high court will actually nominate a strict constitutionalist, the likelihood of a Democrat-controlled Senate due to down ticket losses, with Chuck Schumer as the new majority leader, makes any chance of saving the court unlikely.
While the reasons for evangelical support for Trump are many, a gentleman who probably considers himself a CCC recently posted his rationalization for supporting Trump on his Facebook account using the weak “Jesus isn’t running” defense:
I guess Norm has never heard of Charles Spurgeon who once advised: “Of two evils, choose neither.” Or perhaps he’s never been told how the Apostle Paul encourages us to aim for perfection. Sadly, he probably has since he is the Chancellor of a major theological seminary.
Or maybe, like many in the evangelical community, he’s left the Christian Right to join the church glee club for the Republican Party.
I know Jesus isn’t on the ballot, although Trump must think he’s pretty close since he’s never asked forgiveness for his sins, but I think that Christians can object to Donald Trump for very practical reasons.
For instance, why accept the either/or candidates offered by the system designed to ensure that either/or always wins? Donald Trump is right when he says the game is rigged. It’s a game designed by the establishment with rules favoring the establishment in order to guarantee that the establishment always comes out on top.
Quite honestly, the evangelical community has become lazy and indifferent about elections, excusing their refusal to fight for America with a pat “God’s will” rationale when evil inevitably wins. And the sad part is that we have been equipped with all we need to fight for righteous leadership.
“We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. (II Corinthians 10:3-4)
And what is that weapon? Prayer.
“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14)
Have you ever wondered how the 2016 election could have been different if the evangelical sell-outs had rejected the establishment, and instead of compromising and campaigning for an “imperfect” candidate, spent those efforts in prayer for righteous leadership?
Come to think of it, maybe some in the evangelical community have been doing just that. And perhaps, just perhaps, the #FreeTheDelegates movement is His answer to those prayers. I hope so, or we just might be witnessing the end of the Religious Right . . . and the end of our constitutional Republic.
