GOP fake repeal of Obamacare coming together as planned

Donald Trump and the GOP are finding it much harder than expected to break their campaign promise to repeal Obamacare. After a growing number of GOP senators went on record to oppose the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 (BCRA), Mitch McConnell announced that he would delay the vote on the fake repeal of Obamacare until after next week’s July 4th holiday.

While it’s tempting for conservatives to look at this as a minor victory, it is nothing of the sort. In fact, this is pretty much following the game plan used by Trump and Paul Ryan when they squeaked the House version of fake repeal into law last month.

Check this out:

  1. The House released an unpopular version of fake repeal of Obamacare. So did the Senate.
  2. Facing enormous opposition, the House leadership withdrew the original version of the fake repeal of Obamacare. So did the Senate.
  3. Donald Trump held a meeting with House GOP members to threaten those who opposed the fake repeal of Obamacare. He did the same with the Senate yesterday.
  4. Trump and his surrogates ran campaigns against Conservatives for opposing the Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA). Trump has announced he will do the same against Conservatives in the Senate who oppose BCRA.
  5. After returning from a break, the House resubmitted a new version of the fake repeal of Obamacare. The Senate can do the same when they return from their holiday.

Of course, this could have all been avoided if Trump and the GOP had truly intended to honor their pledge to repeal Obamacare. Unfortunately, as we have since learned, this fake repeal is what they had in mind all along.

As we learned after Obamacare was first passed, the end goal has always been a single-payer government-run health care system. This is one part of Obamacare Trump has always favored, and the GOP is happy to oblige.

As we approach the next election, and the fake repeal of Obamacare continues to implode, expect to hear more about the single-payer health care. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is running for reelection in 2018 and is considered a potential 2020 Democrat candidate for president, intends to make single-payer a key issue for Democrats as a way to win back Trump voters.

And the senator from Massachusetts could have some major support in that effort. Mitch McConnell is already threatening to work with Democrats–something Trump has also said he would do–if the GOP fails to pass the fake repeal of Obamacare, and some big bucks to finance the single-payer campaign could be coming from Warren Buffett. As the fourth richest man in the world and a guy with a long track record of supporting Democrats, Buffett recently announced his desire to see America adopt single-payer health care as the “best system” for the country.
