It was American writer and humorist Samuel L. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, who once said, “Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.” Though he lived over 100 years ago, the words of the Missouri native are just as true today as they were then—especially when it comes to the Republican leadership.
As the GOP prepares to get back to work following their annual retreat, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan and Co. have laid out their path forward heading into the 2018 election.
First on the agenda? A House vote to pass the FIFTH Continuing Resolution since September to fund the government through March 22nd, before the current stopgap bill expires next week.
Chances of avoiding another shutdown if the GOP fails aren’t looking too good right now. Although, Donald Trump’s renewed promise to give amnesty and a pathway to citizenship for up to 1.8 million illegal aliens might be the ticket for buying enough Democrat votes to pass the CR.
On the possibility of another shutdown, Mitch McConnell has assured America that it won’t happen again—just like he promised last month.
Sure, the Constitution requires Congress to actually create a budget, but idiots more worried about keeping their jobs than keeping their oaths are quite happy to band-aid their way to November.
Next up? The GOP promise to repeal Obamacare. No, they’re not going to keep their promise, they’re officially abandoning it. Not only that, but Paul Ryan has been secretly working on a plan to bail out Obamacare using a potentially illegal budget gimmick.
Yeah, you’d think that a member of Congress looking to keep their job would at least try to appear as if they’re keeping their promises, but we’re talking about idiots here, and idiots think they can go back on their word any time they want and keep their cushy positions.
Mark Twain also said something else that could apply to GOP leadership: “Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason.”
Hey, it sounds like Mr. Clemens was talking about an Article V Convention of States, doesn’t it?
