Harry Reid thinks I’m too stupid to understand the internet

I’ve been pretty proud of how The Strident Conservative has grown since I founded it in 2009. Thanks to the support from a myriad of readers, it has become one of the internet’s best sources for Conservative opinion and satire.

At least, that’s what I used to think.

In a statement released today regarding the administration’s decision to delay the March 31 Obamacare enrollment deadline, Harry Reid—who has developed a reputation for making stupid statements—attempted to provide cover for the White House with this explanation:

 “We have hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up who didn’t get through,” he said. “There are some people who are not like my grandchildren who can handle everything so easily on the Internet, and these people need a little extra time. It’s not — the example they gave us is a 63-year-old woman came into the store and said, ‘I almost got it. Every time I just about got there, it would cut me off.’ We have a lot of people just like this through no fault of the Internet, but because people are not educated on how to use the Internet.”

So, there you have it. The low enrollment numbers aren’t due to an unreliable website; they’re due to a group of people who are simply too stupid to know how the internet works.

Man, I wish Al Gore would have provided an instruction manual when he invented this thing.

I wonder if Harry realizes that his explanation is fraught with inconsistencies. For instance, he implies that people like his grandchildren, who have no problem using the internet, aren’t responsible for the low numbers. This is contradicted by a recent Washington Post story that found that uninsured young people simply don’t intend to sign up, not to mention that they can stay on their parents policy until they are 26 years old.

His other implication is that it’s only the dimwitted elderly who are responsible for the problem. According to a recent Pew Research Internet Project, over half of Americans over 65 use the internet and email. And of that group, 70% use the internet and email daily. Overall, the study found that 82% of all adult internet users go online on an average day.

I’m not 63 years old, as Harry used in his example, but I’m sure I’m older than his incredibly talented, internet-savvy grandchildren. I own and operate The Strident Conservative, use social media to promote it, and contribute to websites such as RedState.com. I send and receive hundreds of emails a day, and I’m probably more familiar than I should be with Ebay. In other words, I use the internet every day.

Still, when it comes to the most recent failure with Obamacare, Harry Reid thinks I’m too stupid to understand the internet.
