Gutless On Principles (GOP) Hall of Shame member Mitch McConnell made a bunch of campaign promises told a ton of lies last year when he was running for reelection to the Senate. One of them was a commitment to use the budget process to stop Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty.
Well, apparently that was just sooooooooooooooo yesterday.
On Tuesday, the Senate Majority “leader” said that a bill passed by the House of Representatives last month had been held up in the Senate by Democrats via the filibuster. McConnell says that the House will have to come up with new legislation that could help get a handful of Democrats on board in order to reach the 60-vote threshold.
“It’s clearly stuck in the Senate,” said McConnell. “The next step is obviously up to the House.”
WOW! What leadership! And what a crock of crap! The next step is obviously up to McConnell, not the House, because budget matters in the Senate can be passed by a simple majority using budget reconciliation—the same process the Democrats used to cram Obamacare down our throats—which is why the House structured the legislation the way they did.
Michael Steel, official spokesman for John Boehner had this to say about McConnell’s cop-out:
“The House has passed a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, and block the president’s unilateral executive action on immigration. There’s little point in additional House action.”
Sounding more like Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer, several inside-the-Beltway RINOs came to McConnell’s rescue:
- Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (TX) blamed the House for the Senate’s troubles, saying that “they’d like to leave the hot potato with us and I think we’ve made pretty clear that we’ve tried our best and the math doesn’t work.”
- Senator Jeff Flake (AZ)—an appropriate name if there ever was one—shared his view that “we would be much better off actually debating immigration legislation than debating this spending bill.”
- Appropriations Committee member Senator Lamar Alexander (TN) summed up his feelings by saying, “After we’ve tried three times it looks like we may need a fresh idea from the House.”
In an interesting bit of irony, each one of these pathetic representatives of the American people were challenged by REAL conservatives during their primaries. While the machine was successful in achieving McConnell’s goal of crushing those challengers, the words of these RINOs proves that they are anything but conservative, and that while the attempt to beat them failed, the effort was noble thing.
In a Politico interview last summer, McConnell rattled off a laundry list of ideas for stopping Obama’s freedom-killing agenda, including the use of “riders” to spending bills—you know, like the amnesty rider attached to the House DHS spending bill. But just as he has done his whole career, he lied.
And as The Eagles once sang:
You can’t hide your lying eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you’d realize
There ain’t no way to hide your lying eyes
