Are you a fan of Star Wars movies? Do you remember the scene in Star Wars IV: A New Hope where Obi-Wan Kenobi describes the Mos Eisley spaceport on Tatooine like this…?
If George Lucas changed the name of Tattooine to America, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s description of Mos Eisley could easily and accurately be a description of Washington D.C. I think “scum and villainy” provides a pretty accurate description of most of the men and women working there.
Consider, for example, the outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.
He recently was interviewed by Dana Bash of CNN, where he was asked about his questionable behavior as Senate Majority Leader in 2012 and his libelous character assassination of Mitt Romney from the Senate floor. Not surprisingly, he offered no apologies nor regrets for his actions. In fact, he
Reminded by Bash that Republicans had branded his blatant malice as “McCarthyite,” Reid defended his indefensible attack in a manner that would even make Obi-Wan blush.
“Well, they can call it whatever they want,” said Reid. “Romney didn’t win, did he?”
What scum! And speaking of scum, that reminds me of a scene in Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi.
It’s the scene where Princess Leia, disguised as the bounty hunter Boushh, demands double the reward for Chewbacca and holds an armed thermal detonator to show she’s serious. Do you remember Jabba’s response?
“This bounty hunter is my kind of scum”
Hmmmmm… “My kind of scum.” Sounds like Jabba the Hutt would love Harry Reid.
