In an apparent poke in the eye of pro-life Catholics, the University of Notre Dame announced this year’s recipients of the prestigious Laetare Medal: Vice President Joe Biden and former Speaker of the House John Boehner. The medal is given annually to in recognition of outstanding service to the Catholic church and society by an American Catholic “whose genius has enabled the arts and services, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity.
Biden and Boehner? Are you kidding me?
According to Rev. John I. Jenkins, president of Notre Dame, their selection was made as a statement against a “toxic political environment.” Jenkins has a history of choosing politics over life, so it comes as no surprise that politics was involved in the selection of Biden and Boehner:
“It’s a good time to remind ourselves what lives dedicated to genuine public service in politics look like. We find it in the lives of Vice President Biden and Speaker Boehner.”
It’s simply a crock to call two men who have made a living off the backs of taxpayers while also lining their pockets with payola and kickbacks from special interests and lobbyists “servants.” Mother Teresa was a servant. These two are nothing more than poster children for term limits.
Still, how can an organization that claims to be pro-life justify any recognition of Biden, who claims to believe life begins at conception but supports murdering the unborn; and Boehner, who claims to be pro-life while voting to fully fund the baby butchers at Planned Parenthood?
The bottom line? They can’t. Or to be more accurate, the choose not to.
Michael Sean Winters at the National Catholic Reporter writes:
“[Notre Dame] has made a bold move to begin the fraught process of dismantling the architecture of the culture warrior model of the church that has plagued our church and our country for too long. [This selection] makes clear what should have always been clear, namely, that there is more to know about a candidate or government official than their position on abortion.”
Yeah. Who cares about the murder of millions of unborn babies when there are political connections to be made?
