Back in October of 2015, Governor Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown signed Assembly Bill 1461, also known as the New Motor Voter Act. This bill automatically registers people to vote through the Department of Motor Vehicles unless they opt out. Under the law, any person who renews or secures a driver’s license through the DMV may register to vote, including illegal immigrants who are now eligible to obtain a license.
To be fair, California isn’t the first, and most likely won’t be the last, to pass this type of legislation. And New York City isn’t even messing with trying to hide it with the DMV. Bertha Lewis, head of the Black Institute, is pushing for legislation this spring expressly created to allow illegal immigrants and other undocumented folks to vote.
As we see in a recent story by National Review, this movement is about to become all the more troubling.
Just over a week ago, several big money left-wing organizations—including the League of Women Voters and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)—filed a lawsuit to reverse a U.S. Election Assistance Commission decision which allowed states to enforce laws ensuring that only citizens are registered to vote.
And who is lining up to help them? None other than Obama’s Department of Justice and Attorney General Loretta Lynch, considered by many to be on Obama’s short list as a possible nominee to the Supreme Court.
Under Article I, Section 2 and the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, the states have the power to establish the qualifications for electors. Of course, Obama and the rest of the progressives in America aren’t too keen on the Founding Fathers and their emphasis on state’s rights, and they are always working on ways to seize them from the states and consolidate them under an all-encompassing federal government.
Conservatives have warned for years that the primary motivation of those who favor amnesty for illegal immigrants was to establish a new base of millions of liberal voters after they were legalized. But now it looks like that is no longer the case.
Why mess with all the hassles and political fallout of legalization when you can accomplish your objectives by rigging Motor Voter laws using the muscle of Obama’s Justice Department?
