With week two of the NFL season upon us, the Colin Kaepernick inspired protest against the National Anthem in support of radical, racist organizations such as Black Lives Matter is causing some unpleasant fallout for the NFL and the rich spoiled athletes it employs. Looking back at Week One, the NFL saw a significant drop in viewership of its nationally televised games when compared to opening weekend in 2015.
The Thursday night game between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers was down eight percent from last year’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots. The Sunday Night Football game between the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals was down 18 percent in the 18-49 demographic from last year’s match-up featuring the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys. And the Monday Night Football double-header witnessed a decrease in the ratings for both games, with a drop from 9.8 (Philadelphia Eagles vs.Atlanta Falcons) to 9.1 (Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Washington Redskins) in the early game, and a drop from 9.5 (Minnesota Vikings vs. San Francisco 49ers) to 7.1 (LA Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers).
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is OK with Kaepernick and his hijacking of the NFL’s national stage–as is Barack Obama. While spewing the type of milquetoast, non-answer liberals often resort to when faced with taking a stand on a political hot potato issue, the leader of the NFL said this to the Associated Press:
“I don’t necessarily agree with what he’s doing. I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don’t live in a perfect world. On the other hand, we believe very strongly in patriotism in the NFL. I personally believe very strongly in that.”
I think ol’ Roger might have confused “patriotism” with the NFL franchise from New England. But what the milksop was really saying is “I’m a coward, and I don’t have the guts to do what I should.”
By default, Goodell’s support of the Kaepernick hissy-fit means he’s OK with the bench-warmer’s feelings when it comes to Black Lives Matter, the movement that inspires Kaepernick’s talking points. I guess that explains why Goodell prevented the Dallas Cowboys from adding a memorial decal to their helmets recognizing the Dallas police officers massacred at the hands of a Black Lives Matter sympathizer.
Some athletes are starting to take a hit in their pocketbooks after losing endorsement deals. For example, Denver Broncos player, Brandon Marshall, just lost a major endorsement deal with Century Link — his third lost endorsement since his protest before the Broncos – Panthers game.
As a fan of the Andy Griffith Show, I think the NFL needs to do what Barney Fife would under these circumstances:
Of course, they won’t do anything about it. Instead, they’ll sit on the sidelines–much like Kaepernick does during the National Anthem–hoping that it will just resolve itself.
In the meantime, take comfort that Roger Goodell is “personally opposed” to these protests, which he hopes will pacify you enough to keep spending your hard-earned dollars on the NFL.
