The Trump campaign’s Faustian Bargain with illegal immigration

Deal with the devil

You may recall last weekend when Trump’s Campaign Manager, Kellyanne Conway and Trump’s immigration advisor, Senator Jeff Sessions, made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows to talk about Trump’s pivot away from the number one reason people supported him for president—his immigration policy.

Occasionally, the talking heads that represent a campaign say things differently than the way they intended. However, this shift was confirmed by Trump himself a few days later during one of his daily appearances on Trump TV, aka FOX News. In a show hosted by Trump’s favorite fair and balanced cheerleader, informal advisor, and non-journalist, Sean Hannity, he said:

HANNITY: Any part of the law that you might be able to change that would accommodate those people that contribute to society, have been law-abiding, have kids here? Would there be any room in your mind — because I know you had a meeting this week with Hispanic leaders.
TRUMP: I get it. I had a meeting with great people, great Hispanic leaders. And there certainly can be a softening. Because we’re not looking to hurt people. We want people, we have some great people in this country. We have some great, great people in this country.

It’s important to remember that these “great people” are in the country illegally. Nevertheless, this pivot means that the deportation force Trump once promised to create is no more.

Many in politics warned that this would happen, including Ted Cruz. And you would think that there would be those in Trump’s campaign that could admit that his so-called evolution on his number one campaign promise is, in reality, a flip-flop—perhaps even a necessary one. But alas, the Faustian Bargain they made with the devil—I mean The Donald—requires them to abandon their spiritual values and moral principles to be a part of his campaign.

Kellyanne Conway has doubled down with her defense of her new boss, saying that Trump’s position on immigration is the same it has always been. Though she probably meant that to sound differently than it did, it’s perhaps the first honest thing she’s said about it. Because up until he ran for the GOP nomination, Trump was an on again/off again, open-borders, pro-amnesty liberal.

Meanwhile, Jeff Sessions told Faux News’ FOX and Friends that he can continue supporting Trump and his new, kinder, gentler immigration policy. An interesting position when you realize that Trump is now essentially running on Marco Rubio’s immigration policy—a policy so reprehensible to Sessions during the primaries that he refused to endorse Rubio because of it.

There is one conservative sellout, Ann Coulter, who’s not very happy about Trump’s pivot for two reasons. First, he’s backtracking on his number one campaign promise which was the main reason she backed him in the first place. Second, she’s stuck with dealing with this right in the middle of the release of her newest book, In Trump We Trust. Coulter is threatening to cancel her book tour if Trump goes with his new immigration policies. Why? Because she wrote in her book, “There’s nothing Trump can do that won’t be forgiven, except change his immigration policies.”

It’s impossible to have any sympathy for Ann Coulter, since she has sold her soul once again by reinforcing her support of Trump even after his flip-flop–a true Faustian Bargain.
