I’m a constitutional Conservative. That means that I will only vote for candidates who adhere to the foundation laid by our Founding Fathers within the Constitution, such as: limited federal power, states rights, respect for the three separate but equal branches of government, and a strong commitment to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And I expect candidates to have, at least, a basic knowledge and understanding of the Constitution.
For this reason, I am still opposed to Donald Trump becoming our next president.
As we have documented in the past, Trump has displayed a blatant disregard for gun rights along with freedom of the press and speech. He has displayed a willingness to abuse the power of the presidency as commander-in-chief, and against the free market. He has also stated his intention to abuse executive orders to do as he wishes as president; much like Obama, but for “good things.”
And let’s not forget his belief that his sister and other judges sign bills into law.
Trump’s lack of understanding when it comes to the Constitution is clearly obvious from the examples above, but in a so-called unity meeting with Republicans yesterday, he confirmed his ignorance of the document he would be sworn to uphold and defend as president.
When asked by one of the people in attendance about how he would protect Article I of the Constitution, which outlines the powers of the legislative branch, he said he would “protect Article I, Article II,” and even “Article XII.” Sounds good, until you realize that there are only seven articles.
Now, I don’t expect him to be able to quote the Constitution verbatim–although Ted Cruz can–but I would expect him to at least know how many articles and amendments it contains.
Donald Trump has only marginally displayed any seriousness about becoming president, and his history as a candidate shows a complete lack of convictions. But when you add his obvious ignorance and/or indifference about the Constitution, he is clearly unqualified in my book to be president.
Perhaps the reason he doesn’t worry about the details of the Constitution is because he might not serve, even if he wins. At least that’s what he recently implied in a New York Times interview. Who knows?
