Donald Trump’s unlikely rise to the presidency began with one simple promise to fix America’s out-of-control illegal immigration problem. Beginning with a promise to build a “big, beautiful, powerful wall” on our southern border–and have Mexico pay for it–Trump’s illegal immigration strategy included a commitment to overturn Obama’s unconstitutional Executive Orders allowing illegals to stay in America.
But just like his broken promise about the wall–he’ll still build it, but taxpayers are footing the bill–Trump’s promise to reverse Obama’s Executive Orders was officially broken yesterday when he chose to keep the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA) order in place allowing approximately one million so-called DREAMers to stay in the country.
Of course, like most lying politicians are prone to do when they need to cover their tracks, Trump’s policy announcement contained a miscellany of details designed to distract from his broken promises. For instance, one provision included in the DHS guidelines would direct the immediate return of Mexican immigrants who are apprehended along the border back home, pending the outcomes of their deportation hearings.
But as we are beginning to see, Trump’s noticeable pivot away from his commitment to deal with illegal immigration was real. And we are about to see how bad it will be.
After being selected as TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year, Trump was interviewed by the publication and was asked about the millions of DREAMers still in the country thanks to DACA and how his promise to deport millions of illegals would affect them. Trump’s response confirmed his intention to cave.
“We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud. They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Following the interview, even some of Trump’s so-called Conservative supporters saw the writing on the wall and ran for cover.
Sounds like the big sell-out is coming. Oh well. The voters did what we could. If Trump sells out, it's not our fault. https://t.co/tdMpAuDaRI

Of course, the goose-stepping Trumpbots that defend Trump’s lies under any and all circumstances will defend him on this one too. In fact, using Trump’s words mixed with an idea I picked up from a Bernard Goldberg piece where he wrote about the irrational support Trump enjoys from his minions, I think Trump could shoot someone who disagrees with him about the DACA decision in the middle of 5th Avenue and not lose their support. SAD.
How will Trump’s decision to allow DREAMers to stay in America affect the country? Based on the following facts, not so good:
- Their presence has already resulted in higher crime rates, including rape.
- They have caused seriously overcrowded schools with a record number of non-English-speaking students.
- It has caused an explosion of the welfare state.
When the Supreme Court ruled against DACA last year in a 4-4 tie, they also ruled against the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA)–illegal aliens who had a child born while in America, sometimes referred to as “anchor babies“–and Trump’s announcement yesterday didn’t address this Executive Order either. But I think I know what will happen.
I predict that Trump will make an announcement in the near future where he will let DAPA stay in place in order to keep these families together. Something else to “make people happy and proud.”
