In an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation, Washington Governor Jay Inslee (D) — a possible 2020 candidate for president — was asked about Trump’s emergency declaration for border security. In response, Inslee warned Republicans that the new standard created by this abuse of executive power would become the rulebook by which Democrats would govern on issues like so-called climate change.
“Republicans ought to stand up on their hind legs, because they took an oath to the Constitution, not to Donald Trump, and reverse this decision.
“But if there are new rules, the Republicans have to understand that Democrats will play by whatever the rules are, particularly when it comes to climate change.”
Regardless of where you come down on the issue of a border wall, Trump’s threat to usurp Congress by issuing a Constitutionally questionable national emergency declaration has the potential to destroy what little remains of the separation of powers and the role of Congress as the representatives of the people.
By the way, I’m calling it a “threat” because Trump has been so busy golfing and tweeting about “Fake News” that he hasn’t actually signed a national emergency declaration as of today. I guess one man’s “emergency” is another desperate politician’s opportunity to feed his base and keep himself in the media spotlight.
Inslee’s suggestion that climate change could be the next national emergency shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Democratic Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey recently launched their much-heralded Green New Deal resolution recently. This radical plan calls for the federal government to assume full control of the economy in order to make America 100% “green energy” dependent while simultaneously advancing a boatload of Far-Left agenda items like “social, economic, racial, regional, and gender-based justice.”
When you consider that every major candidate running for the Democrat nomination has adopted most, if not all, of the Green New Deal as a part of their platforms, it’s easy to see how the new Democrat president could use it to issue a national emergency declaration to save us from an environmental crisis.
Global warming won’t be the only area targeted by Democrats using the precedent Trump and the GOP are about to establish.
A few weeks ago, Nancy Pelosi informed the GOP that the next Democrat president could use a national emergency declaration to advance the Democrats’ anti-gun agenda. Additionally, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) tweeted his own list of Far-Left issues he thinks could fall under a “national emergency” declaration.
Gun violence is a national emergency
Climate Change is a national emergency
Income inequality is a national emergency
Access to healthcare is a national emergency
Building a wall on the southern border is not.

It’s becoming a game of sorts for Trump, the GOP, and so-called conservatives to ridicule the Far-Left’s agenda as too extreme to succeed, but I remember how they did the same thing when Democrats first proposed Obamacare.
The rumblings we are hearing from Democrat leadership and the socialists who are setting the agenda for the Party shouldn’t be dismissed as mere political rhetoric. Nor should we assume they will fail to achieve their goals, particularly in light of the noticeable shift to the left by Republicans who have abandoned conservatism and embraced Trumpservatism to create “conservative socialism.”
If Trump declares a national emergency to build his long-promised wall, all bets are off. Our Constitution will essentially become null and void, and our great Republic will move one step closer to extinction.
